The Golden Plains High School Football Team hosted Weskan for their final regular season game on October 16. The Coyotes, who remain undefeated this season, defeated the Bulldogs 53-6 in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs won the toss and elected to receive but had to punt back to the Coyotes. The Coyotes quickly scored in the end zone taking an 8-0 lead. The Dogs answered with some short gains, but the Coyotes took over and scored once again.
Adam Ritter returned the kick and made a first down. The Dogs advanced with carries by Conner Kier and pass completions from Ruxin Arnberger to Parker Vahling and to Cristian Garcia. They finished the drive with a touchdown run by Arnberger. Then the PAT kick was blocked and the Dogs were on the board 6-14.
Weskan answered with couple of quick scores to lead 26-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Coyotes controlled the offense in the second quarter with quick runs, a fumble recovery, and a touchdown pass to lead 47-6 at the half.
Back on the field for the second half, the Bulldogs stepped up their defense and made some stops, but the Coyotes made their way to the endzone to finish the game 53-6 midway through the third.
“I thought we played hard,” said Arnberger. “We did not tackle as well as we would have liked to. Our goal at Wheatland is to minimize mistakes, compete, and play a full game.”
The Bulldogs’ record dropped to 5-2 with this loss. They will finish out their regular season schedule against Wheatland/Grinnell in Grainfield on October 23 before heading into cross bracket play the following week.
