Eagles Show Flashes Despite Rivalry Loss at Goodland

GOODLAND — Colby High School endured a difficult night against rival Goodland on Friday, Oct. 9, falling 50-0 to the Cowboys. Although penalties and turnovers kept the Eagles from finding the end zone, Colby produced several promising offensive plays and a pair of interceptions in the second half.

The Eagles began the game with a spark when Julian Salcido returned the opening kickoff into Goodland territory. Colby moved the chains on the ground before a holding penalty erased a third-down completion to Nathan Cates and stalled the opening drive.

Colby’s defense responded by forcing a quick Goodland punt, but the Cowboys returned an interception for the first score of the game. A 67-yard touchdown pass later in the opening quarter gave Goodland a 14-0 advantage.

The Eagles continued searching for a breakthrough. Carter Gordon, Neale Morrison, Gage Krohn and Ethan Reinert contributed carries, while Cates, Salcido and Sean Wederski made plays in the passing game. Salcido hauled in a 17-yard reception late in the first quarter, helping Colby advance toward midfield.

One of the Eagles’ best offensive moments came at the beginning of the second quarter. Facing fourth-and-7 near midfield, Morrison connected with Wederski on a screen pass that gained 18 yards and moved the ball to the Goodland 31. Colby was unable to capitalize, however, as another false start and a delay-of-game penalty pushed the offense backward before the Cowboys took over on downs.

Goodland added two touchdowns in the second quarter and carried a 30-0 lead into halftime. Even as the Cowboys threatened late in the half, Colby’s defense continued to compete. Dalton Jacob recorded a sack during a Goodland drive that reached the Eagles’ red zone.

The third quarter brought more adversity, including two kickoffs recovered by Goodland, but it also featured some of Colby’s strongest individual defensive plays.

McCager Wright dropped the Goodland quarterback for a loss after the Cowboys began a possession deep in Colby territory. Later in the quarter, Salcido came away with an interception after a tipped pass, giving the Eagles the ball at their own 25-yard line.

Colby immediately tried to turn the takeaway into momentum. Morrison broke loose for a 27-yard run into Goodland territory and later converted a fourth down with an eight-yard carry. The promising possession ended with a fumble, but the Eagles’ defense quickly returned the favor when Cates intercepted a Goodland pass.

That takeaway gave Colby possession in Cowboys territory and helped set up the Eagles’ best scoring opportunity of the night. The drive continued into the fourth quarter, with a Goodland offsides penalty moving the chains and an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty advancing Colby to the Cowboys’ 5-yard line. Goodland’s defense ultimately kept the Eagles out of the end zone and took over at its own 19.

The Cowboys added the final touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

The final score did not reflect every positive moment for Colby. Salcido and Cates each created a turnover, Jacob and Wright supplied sacks, Morrison provided the offense’s longest run, and Wederski delivered an important fourth-down reception. The Eagles also showed they could move the ball when they stayed on schedule.

The next step will be turning those flashes into sustained drives. Penalties repeatedly erased productive plays or left Colby facing long-yardage situations, making it difficult for the offense to develop a rhythm.

Colby will have another opportunity to respond when the Eagles travel to Ulysses for a 7 p.m. conference game Friday, Oct. 16.
