The Golden Plains High School Football team won their Homecoming game against Western Plains in Rexford on September 25. The Dogs defeated the Bobcats 54-6 at the half. “It was amazing,” said Freshman Anthony Schippers. “I was glad we won our Homecoming game.”
Western Plains won the toss and elected to receive. The Bulldogs’ strong defense, led with tackles by Kelby Buehler, Cristian Garcia, Adam Ritter, and Schippers, forced them to punt. The Dogs moved the ball with carries by Ritter and passes from Ruxin Arnberger to the 7 yard line. Sophomore Parker Vahling finished in the end zone for a 6-0 Bulldog lead. The Bobcats quickly turned the ball back over to the Dogs who connected with a pass from Arnberger to Tannor Todd for a second Bulldog score. Jose Rios kicked the conversion putting the Dogs up 14-0.
Back on offense, the Bobcats fumbled the ball allowing Conner Kier to recover for the Bulldogs. He advanced the ball and Vahling made a first down. Ritter ran in another TD for the Dogs and Kasch Buehler ran in the extra point to give the Dogs a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Dogs opened the second with Kier running the ball to the 4 yard line. Arnberger ran in the score extending the Bulldog lead. Jesus Dominguez kicked back to the ‘Cats who proceeded to make their only score of the night. The Dogs answered with a kick return by Ritter. Kelby Buehler ran in the extra point for GP.
The Bobcats continued to struggle to move the ball as the Dogs stopped them repeatedly. Kier made another long run allowing Arnberger to finish the drive across the goal line midway through the second quarter. Koen Schaben ran in the PAT putting the Dogs up 41-6.
The Bobcats tried to gain yards by putting the ball in the air but were unable to connect. Back on offense, Kier scored for the Dogs with just a few minutes left to play. Ritter finished the game with one final Bulldog touchdown with .37 on the clock. A PAT pass from Javier Romero to Adam Ritter ended the game at half with a 54-6 Bulldog win.
Parker Vahling had 41 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns. Adam Ritter added 39 yards for 1 touchdown and Conner Kier had 31 yards for 1 touchdown. Ruxin Arnberger had 19 rushing yards and 1 touchdown, and Kasch Buehler had 3 rushing yards. Arnberger passed for 85 yards and 2 TD’s. Javier Romero and Jose Rios each passed for three yards.
Tannor Todd received for 8 yards and 1 touchdown, Ritter 28 yards/1 TD, Cristian Garcia 25 yards, Kelby Buehler 27 yards, and Nash Ziegelmeier 3 yards. Tackles were made by Ritter 7, Schippers 6, Arnberger 5, Kelby Buehler 4, Garcia 2, Rios 1, and Kasch Buehler 1.
“This was a great game as everyone had time on the field,” continued Schippers. “Running the ball was hard because of the rain; throwing worked better for us. We also had some good kicks with Jose Rios and Jesus Dominguez sharing the kicking duties.”
The Dogs, with a 3-1 season record, will play at home again on October 2 when they host the 0-4 Brewster Bulldogs. “Our goal with Brewster is to play more physical and reduce turnovers,” added Schippers. “We want to make sure we do not go into the game overconfident.”
