The Golden Plains High School Cross Country Team qualified the girls team and two individual Lady Bulldog runners for the state meet in Wamego on October 31. The girls team placed third overall to qualify while Elizabeth Weiner and Adilyn Meier each qualified individually for the third consecutive season.
Weiner ran a season PR of 20:48.31 to place second at the Sub-State meet in Tribune on October 24. This is just a few seconds shy of her career best run of 20:10.9 ran last year. “I’m happy with how the race turned out,” said Weiner. “It was a good day.”
Meier placed seventh at sub-state with a 21:50.39 finish to qualify individually. “It was amazing!” said Meier. “The weather was beautiful. This was our first time to ever run in Tribune and the course was unfamiliar. I am so excited to return to state!”
This was the second year in a row that the girls team qualified to run at state. Team members running at state are Searee Bruggeman who set a PR of 25:08.24 at Sub-State, MaKenlea Focke who ran 25:41.35, Wendy Garcia who finished in 25:52.05, Estrella Aguilar running at 26:17.46, and Madison Focke who ran 27:26.48.
“We are super-excited to start the tradition of having our team run at state,” added Weiner. “We are hoping for good weather and to have everyone run their best. “Our goal is to have the team place at state,” added Meier. “We need to keep a positive mind set and end the season on a good note.”
Three boys ran at sub-state, which isn’t enough to enter a team. Juan Garcia finished his season at 20:40.22, Vincent Taylor ran a 23:26.68, and Brandon Karnes finished in 27:53.40. “The boys ran well,” continued Weiner, “but there are some really fast runners out there.”
