Trojans Split Doubleheader with Hutchinson at Carl Adams Field

Colby Community College and Hutchinson Community College split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon as the Trojans hosted the Blue Dragons at Carl Adams Field on March 14. Hutchinson captured the opener in extra innings, 5–4, before Colby responded with a 7–6 victory in the second game to earn the split.

Game one proved to be a tightly contested battle that stretched into extra innings before the Blue Dragons were able to pull away late.

Colby struck first in the bottom of the opening inning when Olivia Wirth worked a leadoff walk and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Brooke Zinken. Moments later, Briley Christensen delivered the first big swing of the afternoon, launching a two-run home run to center field to give the Trojans an early 2–0 advantage.

Hutchinson responded in the third inning, capitalizing on a string of hits to take control of the scoreboard. The Blue Dragons loaded the bases before a three-run triple by K. Kruger cleared them and put Hutchinson in front. An RBI double from R. Goetz later in the inning extended the lead to 4–2.

Colby chipped away to stay within striking distance. In the bottom of the third inning, Ava Pezely reached base and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Brooke Zinken, trimming the deficit to 4–3.

The Trojans finally pulled even in the sixth inning. After Danielle Miller singled to begin the frame and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, Kylan Sorenson came through with a clutch RBI single to center field, bringing Miller home and tying the game at 4–4.

The game remained deadlocked until the eighth inning when Hutchinson managed to push across the decisive run. A series of singles set the stage before E. Benson-Hladik drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single, giving the Blue Dragons a 5–4 lead.

Colby threatened in the bottom half of the inning but was unable to produce the equalizer, allowing Hutchinson to take the first game.

Christensen finished the opener with one hit, two RBIs, and a two-run home run, while Sorenson added an RBI single. Bailey Jackson also contributed offensively with two hits for the Trojans.

The Trojans bounced back in the second game behind a more explosive offensive performance.

Hutchinson again struck early, plating four runs in the second inning behind a two-run double by R. Dreher and an RBI single from A. Lutz.

Colby responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Kylan Sorenson opened the rally with a double before Bailey Jackson followed with a single. Brooklynn Ekker then delivered one of the biggest hits of the game, ripping a triple that scored both runners and cut the deficit in half. Olivia Wirth followed with an RBI single to bring Colby within one run at 4–3.

The Trojans seized the momentum in the fourth inning. After Wirth reached base, Brooke Zinken blasted a two-run home run to left field, giving Colby its first lead of the game at 5–4.

Colby added two more insurance runs in the fifth inning. Jackson drove in a run with a double before a sacrifice bunt by Emma McDonald brought another Trojan runner home, pushing the lead to 7–4.

Hutchinson mounted one final push in the sixth inning when T. Golly connected for a two-run home run to trim the deficit to 7–6. However, the Trojan defense held firm the rest of the way, recording the final outs to secure the win and split the doubleheader.

Jackson led the offensive effort in game two with three hits, two runs scored, and an RBI. Ekker added a triple and two RBIs, while Zinken’s two-run homer proved to be the difference in the victory.

With the split, the Trojans continued their spring schedule while showing resilience against a strong Blue Dragon squad in front of the home crowd at Carl Adams Field.
