Eagles Take Third at Phillipsburg Quad, Doubles Team Claims Title

The Colby Eagles tennis team competed in a challenging varsity quad on March 30 in Phillipsburg, finishing third overall with nine team points against a strong field that included Hoisington, Phillipsburg, and Hays.

Hoisington captured the team title with 25 points, followed closely by Phillipsburg at 23, while Colby edged Hays for third place. The tournament format featured eight-game sets with team scoring based on individual match results, creating a competitive environment across all brackets.

Colby’s top performance came from the No. 2 doubles team of Ames Scheilke and McCager Wright, who delivered a standout showing by claiming first place. The duo finished 2-1 on the day, compiling a 23-15 game record and a .605 winning percentage. Their ability to control points and close out matches gave the Eagles a key boost in the team standings.

In singles play, Jack Denny represented Colby at the No. 1 position and battled his way to a third-place finish. Denny posted a 1-2 record with a 14-17 game differential, earning his win against Hays while competing in tight sets throughout the day.

Tony Jager also secured a third-place finish at No. 2 singles, going 1-2 with a 10-20 game record. Jager picked up a solid win over Hays and continued to gain valuable experience against tough competition from Phillipsburg and Hoisington.

At No. 1 doubles, Levi Haines and Styker Shaw faced a difficult slate of matches, finishing 0-3 with a 13-24 game record. Despite the results, the pair remained competitive, highlighted by a narrow 7-8 loss that showed their ability to stay within reach against quality opponents.

Match-by-match results underscored the level of competition at the quad. Denny secured an 8-1 win over Hays before falling 6-8 to Phillipsburg and 0-8 to Hoisington. Jager followed a similar path, earning an 8-4 victory over Hays while dropping matches to Phillipsburg and Hoisington. In doubles, Scheilke and Wright recorded wins of 8-5 and 8-2 before a tightly contested 7-8 loss in their final match.

Overall, the Eagles showed resilience and flashes of strong play against some of the top competition in the region. With a first-place finish in doubles and multiple podium placements in singles, Colby continues to build momentum as the season progresses.
