Colby Finishes Third as a Team, Dixon Battles Back for Third at Sugar Hills
April 14, 2026
The Colby High School boys golf team continued its steady progression Tuesday, April 14, competing in a loaded field at Sugar Hills Golf Club in Goodland, where the Eagles placed sixth as a team with a score of 364.
The tournament featured more than 20 teams, Goodland claiming top honors with a score of 336, followed by Oakley (354), and then Colby (364) rounded out the top three teams.
Individually, Colby was led by Kaleb Dixon, who turned in one of the most impressive rounds of the day with a 79, good for third place overall. Dixon finished just behind tournament champion Braylon Mull of Goodland (73) and runner-up Easton Fink of Oakley (78).
Dixon’s round told a story of resilience. He opened with a 41 on the front nine, battling early inconsistency that included multiple bogeys and a double bogey. According to the hole-by-hole scorecard, Dixon sat at six-over through his first seven holes before finding his rhythm. From that point forward, he played the final 11 holes at just two-over par, highlighted by a steady back-nine 38 that matched Fink and trailed only Mull’s 38 on the inward side.
“Dixon was 6 over through 7 and then played the next 11 holes two over,” head coach Rick Williams said. “He really settled in and played well. He has a lot of demons from the past at Goodland and never really played that course well in competition. It was nice to see him confront that and overcome it.”
When comparing Dixon to the two players ahead of him, the difference came early. Mull set the tone with a clean, even-par 35 on the front nine and limited mistakes throughout, while Fink managed his round with consistency despite a slightly higher front-nine 40. Dixon’s early struggles ultimately created a gap that his strong finish nearly erased, as all three players shot 38 on the back nine.
Behind Dixon, Colby saw solid contributions across the lineup. Kade Youngman finished tied for 14th with an 89, providing a reliable second score. Kieren Youngman followed closely with a 90, placing inside the top 20 and continuing to show growth as a key contributor.
“I was really pleased with Kieren Youngman at Goodland,” Williams said. “He is shaping up to be the solid 3 we need.”
Ryker Schmidtberger added a 106, while Cash Tubbs carded a 108 to round out the varsity scoring. Additional rounds from Sean Wederski (123) provided depth experience for the Eagles.
“Our team is progressing well,” Williams said. “We are still looking for consistency in that fourth score but have good candidates to step into that role. The potential for a good team score is there.”
Conditions also played a role in the day’s success, as players competed under favorable weather on a course that showed significant improvement.
“Weather was great,” Williams added. “The course was in the best shape I have seen it in several years.”
With Dixon breaking through on a course that had previously challenged him and the rest of the lineup continuing to develop, the Eagles appear to be trending upward as the season moves forward.
