April 14, 2026
The Colby High School track and field teams turned in a strong showing at the Goodland Invitational on April 14, highlighted by multiple individual champions and a runner-up finish for both the boys’ and girls’ teams.
Competing against a deep field that included Goodland, Ulysses, Holcomb and others, the Eagles leaned on both sprint dominance and field event strength to pile up points across the board. Colby’s girls finished second as a team with 114 points, while the boys also placed second with 115.25 points, trailing only Ulysses on the boys’ side and host Goodland on the girls’ side.
Leading the way for the Colby girls were four individual champions who set the tone early and often throughout the meet.
Sophomore Bailey McCorkle delivered one of the top performances on the track, winning the 400 meters in 1:02.89 and securing a full 10 points for the Eagles. Her victory showcased both endurance and race control, helping anchor Colby’s sprint group.
In the field events, senior Brittany Swartz cleared 5 feet, 4 inches to win the high jump, continuing her consistent success in the event. Swartz also added a runner-up finish in the triple jump, making her one of the most impactful athletes of the day for Colby.
Junior Korrynne Duffey added another gold medal in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet, 6 inches to take first place. Teammate Kylee Haug also contributed points in the event, highlighting Colby’s depth in the vault.
In the throws, senior Kalyssa White dominated the shot put with a winning mark of 32 feet, 10 inches. The Eagles added even more strength in that event with Lily McKinney placing third and Brielle Mackley finishing sixth, giving Colby a major scoring boost.
On the boys side, Colby’s success was powered by a combination of elite sprinting and standout performances in the hurdles and throws.
Junior Jayton Rush claimed the 400-meter title in 52.14, edging a competitive field and continuing his strong season.
Senior Jordan Jones was dominant in the hurdles, sweeping both the 110-meter hurdles (15.11) and the 300-meter hurdles (39.18). His double victory accounted for 20 team points and established him as one of the premier hurdlers in the region.
The Colby boys also captured gold in the 4x400 relay, clocking a winning time of 3:37.10 to close the meet with momentum.
In the field events, senior Bryndon Powell delivered a standout day with two individual titles. Powell won the shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 1 inch and followed it up with a victory in the javelin at 144 feet, 5 inches. His versatility and consistency played a major role in Colby’s team score.
Beyond the champions, Colby saw numerous podium finishes that contributed to their strong team placements. Athletes like Cora DeGood (2nd in the 800), Harper Vaughn (2nd in discus, 3rd in javelin), and Jude Metcalf (3rd in long jump) added key points throughout the meet.
Overall, the Eagles demonstrated balance across sprinting, distance, hurdles and field events, a promising sign as the season continues. With multiple individual champions and strong depth behind them, Colby appears well-positioned to build on this performance heading deeper into the spring schedule.
