Trojans Split with Garden City, Explode for 16 Runs in Game Two Win

Colby Community College’s softball team split a doubleheader with Garden City on April 3 at Carl Adams Field, dropping the opener 5-3 before bouncing back with a 16-14 win in a high-scoring second game.
Game one was a controlled battle early, with Garden City taking a 2-0 lead through the first two innings. Colby answered in the third when Briley Christensen came around to score on an RBI single from Brooke Zinken to cut the deficit in half.
The Broncbusters created separation in the fifth inning, scoring three runs to push their lead to 5-1. A passed ball brought in one run, followed by a two-run swing sparked by a triple and an error.
Colby made a late push in the seventh. Ava Pezely singled to start the inning, Christensen drove her in with a double, and Ashlynn Pavlov followed with an RBI single to bring the Trojans within two. Garden City held on from there to secure the win.
Christensen led Colby in game one, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Pavlov and Olivia Wirth each added two hits, while Zinken drove in a run.
Game two turned into a completely different story.
Colby exploded for five runs in the first inning. Kylan Sorenson delivered an RBI double, Emmy Supernor reached on an error that plated a run, Sorenson later stole home, and Brooklynn Ekker capped the inning with a two-run home run to give the Trojans a 5-1 lead.
Garden City responded with six runs in the second and three more in the third, jumping in front 10-6 and putting Colby on its heels.
Colby answered with its biggest inning of the day.
The Trojans plated six runs in the bottom of the third to reclaim the lead at 12-10. Olivia Wirth drove in a run after being hit by a pitch, Zinken delivered a two-run double, Christensen followed with an RBI single, and Sorenson added another run-scoring hit.
After Garden City trimmed the lead to one in the fourth, Colby again responded in the fifth. Zinken and Christensen both hit home runs, and Jalyssa Sabatka added a two-run single to extend the lead.
Garden City made one final push, scoring three runs in the sixth to pull within 16-14. Cheyenne Cramer came on and shut things down over the final innings to secure the win.
Zinken led the offensive surge, going 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs, including a home run and two doubles. Christensen finished 3-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs, and a home run.
Sorenson added three hits, two runs, and two RBIs, while Ekker drove in two with her home run. Ava Pezely collected three hits and scored twice, and Sabatka added two hits and two RBIs.
Colby totaled 20 hits in the second game, showing a complete turnaround from the opener.
The split highlighted both sides of the Trojans’ day. They came up just short in a tight first game, but responded with one of their most explosive offensive performances of the season to earn the split.
