The Colby Community College baseball team earned a split in a four-game Jayhawk Conference series with Seward County, picking up two wins while continuing to show offensive growth as the season progresses. The Trojans now sit at 12-23 overall and 5-15 in conference play.

Colby opened the series on April 2 in Liberal with one of its most complete performances of the season, securing a 4-2 victory behind a dominant outing on the mound from Rory MacDonald. The sophomore went the distance, allowing just four hits and two runs while striking out four.

The Trojans did their damage early, plating three runs in the first inning. Turner Zdunich delivered an RBI double, and Caden Clifford added a sacrifice fly before later blasting a solo home run in the seventh to provide insurance. Clifford finished the game with two RBIs, while Colby capitalized on five walks and timely hitting to secure the win.

Seward County responded in Game 2, using a series of big innings to pull away for a 19-7 victory. The Saints tallied 18 hits and exploded for six runs in both the fourth and seventh innings to take control.

Despite the loss, Colby showed offensive fight late in the game. Clifford again led the charge with a two-run home run, while Matthew Kesting added a three-run homer as part of a strong middle-of-the-order showing. Turner Zdunich and Callum Thomson each contributed RBIs as the Trojans attempted to keep pace.

The series shifted to Colby on April 4, where the Trojans bounced back in a big way in Game 3 with a 15-11 win powered by one of their best offensive performances of the season. Colby racked up 18 hits and built momentum with a six-run third inning and another six-run fifth.

Charlie Langford led the way with a standout 4-for-5 performance that included a home run and five RBIs. Callum Thomson was nearly perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs, while Jacob Mraz added three hits and scored twice. Matt Murray and Chase Kessler also contributed multi-hit efforts as the Trojans overwhelmed Seward’s pitching staff.

In the series finale, Colby once again showed offensive firepower but could not hold off a late Seward surge in a 14-10 loss. The Trojans collected 13 hits and built multiple scoring innings, but a six-run eighth inning by the Saints proved to be the difference.

Jacob Mraz delivered one of his best games of the series, going 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Langford added two hits and scored twice, while Caden Clifford and Turner Zdunich continued their consistent production at the plate.

Across the four-game set, Colby’s offense was a clear bright spot, producing double-digit hits in multiple games and showing the ability to score in bunches. Langford, Thomson, Mraz and Clifford each played key roles in driving the offense throughout the series.

With the split, the Trojans continue conference play looking to build on their offensive momentum while tightening up pitching and defense as they move deeper into the Jayhawk schedule.

Next up for the Trojans will be a doubleheader vs Otero at home on Tuesday at 2pm.
