May 13, 2026
Riding high entering the postseason, the Colby Eagles hosted the Goodland Cowboys at Casey Quagliano Field on May 13. After overcoming an early deficit, Colby quickly turned things around in commanding fashion.
Goodland struck first, taking a 2-0 edge in the top of the first while Colby’s bats were quiet early. Colby found its rhythm in the second, crossing the plate four times to take a 4-2 lead.
Cobin Curry was opened the rally with a single, then Conner Surmeier was tagged by the pitcher putting two runners on base. Dallas Kleinsorge laid down a bunt that resulted in a Goodland error, allowing Curry to score Colby’s first run.
Kasen Stramel tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center field sending Surmeier home. Later, Braxton Withington reached on second Goodland error that brought in Kleinsorge. Talon Wark brought in Withington giving Colby the 4-2 lead.
Colby added three more runs in the third inning without recording a hit. Kleinsorge and Reid Ryan drew walks, and aggressive baserunning combined with a pair of wild pitches set up a sacrifice fly by Corbin Sherman to extend the lead to 7-2.
Wark and Keegan Glassman opened the fourth inning with back-to-back singles, and Surmeier followed with a two-run single to center field to push Colby’s lead to 9-2.
On the mound, Goodland had no answers for Withington after the first inning. Recently highlighted on social media, Withington ranks third in the state with 95 strikeouts after he earned eight against Goodland.
He retired 12 of the final 14 batters he faced, aided by strong pitching and timely defensive plays. One of Kansas’ premier pitchers, Withington opened the post season with a dominant showing only allowing 2 runs and striking out 8 over 5 innings.
The Eagles’ defense was equally impressive. Keegan Glassman anchored second base with multiple putouts and assists, including all three outs in a perfect fifth inning.
Surmeier led the offense with 3 RBIs. Wark collected two hits and an RBI, Glassman had two hits and an RBI, Curry had two hits and scored twice, and Kleinsorge applied pressure on the bases while recording three runs.
Colby advanced to face Smoky Valley in the second round on May 19. That game was scheduled to begin approximately 25 minutes after the opening contest between Beloit and Cimarron, which starts at 2 p.m.
