Lady Eagles Crowned GWAC Champions, Set to Host Regional Opener

The Colby High School softball team enters postseason play with plenty of momentum after closing the regular season with four emphatic victories and capturing the outright Great West Activities Conference championship.

Over their final two doubleheaders, the Lady Eagles overwhelmed Ulysses High School and Holcomb High School by a combined score of 72-2. Colby swept Ulysses 15-0 and 15-0 on May 5 before rolling past Holcomb 25-2 and 17-0 on May 12.

The conference title also earned Colby the right to host its opening-round regional matchup. The Lady Eagles will face Holcomb again on Tuesday, at 5 p.m. in Colby.

Colby set the tone against Ulysses in the first game when the Eagles erupted for 13 runs in the second inning. Maddie McCarty delivered the biggest blow with a grand slam, finishing with four RBIs. Myka Nolan drove in three runs, while Kenley Moss added two RBIs and scored twice.

In the circle, Landrie McKee was dominant, allowing just one hit over three shutout innings while striking out two.

The second game was more of the same. Morgan Hills and Myka Nolan each recorded two hits and two RBIs, while Sadie Cheney scored twice and added an RBI. Ryler Carter tossed a one-hit shutout and struck out three in three innings.

Colby carried that momentum into its regular-season finale against Holcomb.

Myka Nolan continued her outstanding season by collecting nine hits, six runs scored, and nine RBIs in Colby’s final four games, providing consistent production as the Lady Eagles rolled into postseason play as GWAC Champions.

In game one, the Lady Eagles piled up 25 runs behind a relentless offensive attack. Morgan Hills went a perfect 5-for-5, scored four runs, and drove in three. Emily Flanagin contributed two hits and four RBIs, while Sadie Cheney collected three hits, four runs, and two RBIs.

Ryler Carter struck out six batters over three innings, allowing just two runs.

The nightcap featured even more fireworks.

Morgan Hills blasted two home runs, scored four times, and drove in three runs. Sadie Cheney homered and finished with three hits and two RBIs. Myka Nolan continued her torrid stretch by going 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Kenley Moss added three hits and two RBIs.

Ryler Carter was outstanding once again in the circle, throwing a five-inning shutout as the Lady Eagles capped the sweep with a 17-0 victory.

Several Lady Eagles enter the postseason swinging hot bats. Over the four-game stretch, Morgan Hills totaled 12 hits, 11 runs scored, two home runs, and eight RBIs. Myka Nolan added nine hits and nine RBIs, while Sadie Cheney posted eight hits, a home run, and seven RBIs.

Colby also received key contributions from Maddie McCarty, Emily Flanagin, Kenley Moss, Madi Hull, Fia Tubbs, Ellie McCarty, and Landrie McKee, illustrating the depth that has made the Lady Eagles one of the most balanced teams in the region.

Now the focus shifts to the postseason, where Colby will look to extend its impressive run. With a conference championship secured, a home field advantage in hand, and an offense that has produced 72 runs in its last four games, the Lady Eagles appear ready for the challenge as regional play begins Tuesday evening against Holcomb.
