The Colby High School golf team earned an opportunity to close its season on golf's biggest stage as Lake Shawnee Golf Course in Topeka hosted the KSHSAA 3A State Tournament. The two-day tournament began on May 26, with only a few dozen golfers qualifying for the second day of competition.

While facing a challenging course and a talented field of qualifiers from across Kansas, Colby secured a 12th-place finish as a team. Colby was led by senior Kaleb Dixon who was the only Eagle to play on day 2.

Wichita Collegiate claimed the team championship with a two-round score of 599, while Hesston finished runner-up at 611. Medalist honors went to Wichita Collegiate’s Landon Langston, who carded rounds of 70 and 75 for a 145 total.

For Colby, Dixon turned in the team’s strongest performance. After opening the tournament with a first-day score of 84, he improved by five strokes on the second day with a 79, which tied for the 14th-best round of the day.

Dixon had a great season while leading Colby throughout the spring. He helped the Eagles secure a team championship at the Scott City Invitational with a tournament best 79 and brought leadership to the team as it qualified for the state tournament together.

Colby's team score of 357 on day one left the Eagles 12th overall. The scoring lineup was led by Dixon with an 84, followed by senior Kade Youngman (87), senior Ryker Schmidtberger (89), and junior Kieren Youngman (97). Because the Eagles didn’t advance as a team beyond the first day cut line, those scores stood as the team’s final total.

Kade Youngman finished with an opening-round 87, placing 67th overall. Schmidtberger followed closely with an 89 and finished 72nd, while Kieren Youngman carded a 97 to place 80th. Also representing the Eagles at state were juniors Cash Tubbs, who shot 121, and Sean Wederski, who recorded 130.

Simply reaching the state tournament field marked a significant accomplishment for the Eagles. Head Coach Rick Williams said, "On paper we weren't supposed to be here, but we finished top three at our regional."

While the Eagles fell short of advancing into the second day of team competition, the experience provided a great stepping stone for the younger players. With Dixon advancing, the rest of the team was able to follow along and support him through the final 18 holes, witnessing the challenges that come with competing in a two-day state tournament.

Dixon's top-35 finish highlighted the tournament for the Eagles and brought another chapter to a close on a successful Eagle golf season.
