The Northwest Kansas Pioneers Mountain Bike Race Team completed their inaugural Kansas NICA season, and the impact they made reached far beyond the finish line.
What began as a brand-new mountain bike team in Northwest Kansas quickly developed into one of the state's most respected first-year programs, combining competitive success on the race course with a championship commitment to trail stewardship.
Throughout the spring, the Pioneers demonstrated steady improvement while competing against established programs from across Kansas. By season's end, the team had accumulated eight podium finishes, captured its first race victory, earned a statewide series runner-up, and finished atop the Kansas NICA Teen Trail Corps standings.
Stong Finish Caps Consistent Season
The Pioneers opened their season at Palen Farms in Glen Elder before continuing through Fancy Creek in Manhattan, Lewis-Young Park in Louisburg, and Snake Farm in Lawrence. With each event, the team's confidence and results continued to grow.
Leading the way all season was Parker Williams of Colby, who established himself as one of Kansas' premier JV2 riders. Williams finished on the podium in every race, posting finishes of 2nd, 1st, 2nd, and 2nd while recording the first race victory in program history at Fancy Creek. His consistency throughout the season earned him 2nd Overall in the Kansas NICA JV2 Season Series, an impressive accomplishment for both Williams and the league's newest team.
The younger riders also made significant strides throughout the season.
In the Middle School C division, Jaxon Ohlrogge opened the season with sixth- and seventh-place finishes at Palen Farms and Manhattan, respectively. Ohlrogge earned back-to-back podium finishes with fourth place at Louisburg and fifth at Snake Farm, establishing himself as one of the division's most improved riders.
Also in the Middle School C division, Carter Terry of Atwood showed tremendous no-quit determination throughout the season. Starting at the back of the pack in a field of 35+ riders, Terry’s season highlight came when he passed half the field on a very tight course to finish 16th at Fancy Creek.
Competing in the rookie 5th Grade division, Hunter Hayes improved steadily from sixth place at the season opener to consecutive podium finishes in the final two races. One of the season's defining moments came at Fancy Creek, where Hayes was caught in a multi-rider, starting line crash that left him nearly 45 seconds behind the field. Refusing to give in, he fought through the pack and passed nine riders to finish seventh before closing the year with fourth- and fifth-place podium finishes.
Champions Beyond the Finish Line
While race results highlighted the team's athletic progress, perhaps the Pioneers' greatest accomplishment came away from competition.
Kansas NICA places a strong emphasis on stewardship through its Teen Trail Corps program, which encourages student-athletes to build, maintain, and improve trails throughout the state.
The Northwest Kansas Pioneers embraced that mission from the beginning.
By season's end, the Pioneers had accumulated more volunteer trail hours than any other team in Kansas, earning the 2026 Kansas NICA Teen Trail Corps Team Championship.
Leading that effort was Jaxon Ohlrogge, whose dedication to trail work earned him 2nd Overall Individual in the statewide Teen Trail Corps volunteer hours standings.
The combination of athletic achievement and community service perfectly reflected the values he Northwest Kansas Pioneers seek to instill in every student-athlete.
Building Something Special
For a first-year program, the Northwest Kansas Pioneers exceeded expectations in nearly every measurable way.
2026 Season Highlights
More importantly, the inaugural season established a foundation for mountain biking in Northwest Kansas. The riders demonstrated perseverance, sportsmanship, and a willingness to serve their communities while competing at a high level.
As the team looks ahead to 2027, the Northwest Kansas Pioneers have already proven that success is measured by more than results alone. Through competition, teamwork, and stewardship, the program has created a culture that promises to continue growing for years to come.
For a team that entered the season simply hoping to compete, the Pioneers finished it as one of Kansas NICA's most successful new programs—both on the trail and beyond it!
