Bulldogs Fall to Cougars

The Golden Plains High School football team lost to the Cheylin Cougars 12-58 in Bird City on September 11. “We didn’t have much energy,” said Ruxin Arnberger. “A lot of us were still sick and we just couldn’t get going.”

Golden Plains senior Jesus Dominguez kicked off to the Cougars to start the game. The Cougars returned the ball to the 40 and ran in their first score of the game along with a PAT kick to give them an 8-0 lead. The Dogs could not connect and punted back to the Cougars who quickly increased their lead to 16-0 and added another TD for a 22-0 lead.

Tannor Todd returned the Cougars kick allowing Ruxin Arnberger to connect with Conner Kier for a pass. They had several incomplete passes but gained a few yards with runs by Adam Ritter. Arnberger connected with Kier who finished the drive in the end zone for a Bulldogs touchdown. The PAT did not succeed, and the Dogs were on the board 6-22. The teams traded possessions before the Cougars scored once more to lead 28-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The Cougars scored again to open the second. The Dogs added additional points as Arnberger connected with Kier and Adam Ritter finished the drive in the end zone. The Cougars added one more to end the first half with a 44-12 lead over the Bulldogs.

The Dogs connected on several passes in the third quarter but could not move the ball. They fumbled a ball that was picked up by the Cougars only to have the Cougars fumble and have it recovered by the Bulldogs. The Cougars then intercepted a pass and ran it in for a touchdown. They added one more touchdown and PAT to end the game in the third quarter with a 58-12 win over Golden Plains.

“We are feeling better this week,” said Kasch Buehler, “and we are hoping to get in the groove early in the game against Triplains.” The Bulldogs will play their first home game of the season on September 18 when they host the Triplains Vikings in Rexford.
