Colby sweeps Hill City in three-set home victory

Colby High School held off a late challenge from Hill City to complete a three-set sweep Monday, Sept. 14, at the Colby Event Center.
The Eagles won 25-18, 25-20 and 25-22, improving their season record to 5-6.
Colby opened the match with a 5-1 advantage before Hill City rallied to take a 7-6 lead. The Eagles answered with a 7-2 run, highlighted by a Harper Vaughn kill that extended the margin to 13-9.
Vaughn also helped Colby pull away at the service line. Her difficult serves contributed to a late surge that gave the Eagles a 20-12 lead. Hill City trimmed the deficit to four, but Savannah Krohn served the final two points as Colby closed out the opening set, 25-18.
The Eagles again built an early lead in the second set, going ahead 9-5 following a Krohn service run. Hill City responded with four consecutive points to tie the set at 9.
Colby regained control behind strong serving from Fia Tubbs and timely attacks by Vaughn and Kenley Moss. A long rally at 16-15 ended when Vaughn drove the ball off Hill City’s defense, helping the Eagles establish a two-point cushion.
Colby eventually reached set point at 24-18. The Ringnecks fought off three set points, but a net violation gave the Eagles a 25-21 win and a two-set advantage.
Hill City led for much of the third set and used a 5-0 run to turn a 7-5 deficit into a 10-7 advantage. The Ringnecks later extended their lead to 16-13.
Colby began its comeback with a Bailey McCorkle kill, then pulled even at 18 on a Tubbs attack. An ace by Blaidynn Carmen gave the Eagles their first lead of the late stages, 19-18.
Hill City recovered to move ahead 22-21, but Colby scored four consecutive points to finish the match. Tubbs tied the set with an attack, and Vaughn powered a shot through the Hill City block to put the Eagles in front. A Hill City attack sailed out to create match point before Tubbs’ final serve led to the winning point.
Colby completed the comeback with a 25-22 victory and won the match without dropping a set.
