Mistakes slow Eagles in 20-0 loss to Cimarron

It was a hot and humid evening at Dennen Field as the Colby Eagles welcomed Cimarron for a non-district matchup Friday night. Colby created two takeaways but couldn’t finish the drives on a tough Friday night.
The grandstands filled gradually before kickoff, while familiar groups of families and fans gathered around the outside of the track. The field looked sharp under the lights, but it turned into a difficult night for the home team as penalties, turnovers and missed opportunities contributed to a 20-0 loss.
Colby’s defense created two first-half takeaways and kept the Eagles within striking distance for much of the game. The offense moved the ball at times, particularly on the ground, but could not find the consistency needed to finish a drive.
Cimarron received the opening kickoff and quickly crossed midfield. After completions of 11 and 7 yards, the Bluejays attempted a running play that ended in a fumble. Senior Sean Wederski recovered the ball at the Cimarron 47, giving Colby an early opportunity.
The Eagles leaned heavily on their running game during the opening possession.
Carter Gordon gained 2 yards before Gage Krohn added runs of 5 and 1 yards. On fourth-and-2, junior quarterback Neale Morrison recovered from a difficult snap and dove forward to move the chains.
The drive changed direction when a disrupted pitch resulted in a 13-yard loss. Two Colby penalties pushed the Eagles farther behind the chains.
Facing fourth-and-15, Colby tried a fake punt. Morrison swept to his right and completed a pass to Jack Nordquist for 14 yards, but the Eagles finished just short of the first-down marker.
Cimarron answered with the game’s first scoring drive. A 36-yard completion and a 12-yard quarterback run helped the Bluejays reach the Colby 17. Cimarron scored on a 17-yard pass with 2:32 remaining in the first quarter.
The Eagles stopped the two-point conversion, leaving Cimarron with a 6-0 lead.
Colby’s next possession was again slowed by penalties. Krohn carried twice, and Morrison completed a short pass to Wederski, but a false start on fourth-and-inches forced the Eagles to punt at the beginning of the second quarter.
The Colby defense produced another important stop later in the period.
Cimarron drove inside the Eagles’ 10 before fumbling on fourth down. Sophomore Ceithen Carroll recovered the ball, ending the scoring threat. Senior Boston Woofter was injured during the play and left for the remainder of the game.
Starting near its own goal line, Colby worked out to the 28. Krohn ran for 9 yards, Wederski gained 6 on a pitch and Morrison completed a 10-yard pass to senior Nathan Cates. The drive stalled after a short run and an incomplete pass, forcing another punt.
Cimarron increased its lead late in the half. The Bluejays completed a 33-yard pass to reach Colby territory and later scored on a 16-yard screen. The extra point made it 13-0 with 1:16 remaining.
Colby put together a promising drive before halftime.
After Cimarron was penalized for targeting, Morrison completed an 11-yard pass to junior Julian Salcido. Morrison followed with runs of 8 and 12 yards, helping the Eagles reach the Cimarron 30 with 28 seconds remaining.
The opportunity ended with an interception. Cimarron returned the ball to the Colby 32, but the Eagles’ defense prevented the Bluejays from scoring again before halftime.
Colby entered the break trailing by 13 after a half in which it showed an ability to move the ball on the ground. Penalties and difficulty finishing possessions kept the Eagles from turning that movement into points.
The Eagles received the second-half kickoff but went three-and-out. Freshman Lakeen Fellhoelter entered at center during the possession as Colby worked through its offensive-line injuries.
Cimarron then produced its third touchdown drive. The Bluejays converted a fourth-and-5 with a 16-yard pass and scored on a 13-yard screen with 7:16 remaining in the third quarter. The extra point increased the lead to 20-0.
Colby responded with its best scoring opportunity of the evening.
Wederski opened the possession with an 8-yard run. Morrison then escaped pressure in the backfield, broke several tackles and gained 34 yards to reach the Cimarron 21.
After a holding penalty, Krohn ran for 2 yards and Morrison completed a 6-yard pass to Nordquist. On fourth-and-12, Morrison scrambled away from pressure and found Cates for a 14-yard completion.
The play gave Colby first-and-goal at the Cimarron 10.
A poor snap disrupted the next play. Morrison recovered the ball and attempted a pass toward the end zone, but Cimarron intercepted it. A Colby horse-collar penalty during the return gave the Bluejays additional field position.
Cimarron later attempted a field goal but missed, giving the Eagles another possession early in the fourth quarter.
Colby picked up a first down on the ground and received 15 yards when Cimarron was penalized for a late hit on Morrison. The possession then fell apart under a series of false-start penalties. Krohn had runs of minus-3 and 5 yards before Colby punted.
The Eagles’ defense forced a Cimarron punt on the following possession. Colby began its final drive at its own 3, but two short running plays and an incomplete pass left the Eagles punting from near their goal line.
Rain began to fall during the fourth quarter as Cimarron ran out the remaining time.
Morrison led Colby’s rushing attack with 72 yards on 10 carries, including the 34-yard run during the third quarter. Krohn finished with 30 yards on 11 carries.
Morrison completed 6 of 13 passes for 60 yards. Cates caught two passes for 24 yards, while Nordquist made two receptions for 20 yards. Salcido had an 11-yard reception, and Wederski added a 5-yard catch.
Colby finished with approximately 173 yards of offense. The Eagles recovered two Cimarron fumbles but committed two turnovers of their own, both on interceptions.
The loss dropped Colby to 1-2. The Eagles will begin district play Friday, Sept. 25, with a road game against Hugoton. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
