Middle School Dogs Win First Game

The Golden Plains Middle School football team won their first game of the season over the Logan Trojans on September 3 in Rexford. This is their first win since the 2024 season after playing flag games only all last year.
The Bulldogs received the ball to start the game with seventh grader Dylan Lugo downing the ball and making several runs before finishing in the end zone. The PAT did not succeed and the Dogs were up 6-0. Cort Ziegelmeier recovered a Trojan fumble for the Dogs and Lugo ran to the end zone once again for a 12-0 Bulldog lead.
Lugo, along with Ziegelmeier and Allen Mendoza, made several defensive stops before the Trojans found their end zone. Lugo stopped the PAT run and the Dogs held on to their lead 12-6. Back on offense, the Dogs fumbled the ball with Logan recovering. Eighth grader Treighton Roach made several tackles along with Mendoza and Lugo. Roach made a quarterback sack forcing the Trojans to turn the ball over to the Bulldogs. Lugo ran in the first snap of the series to put the Dogs up 18-6 at the end of the first.
Lugo ran in another Bulldog score to open the second. A PAT pass from Benny Dible to Ryder Hynek connected for the PAT and a 25-6 Bulldog lead. The boys battled it out on the field for much of the quarter but Logan scored once again near the half. The Dogs blocked the PAT pass attempt. As the clock ran down, Lugo crossed the goal line once more to put the Dogs up 31-12 at the half.
Both teams stepped up on defense in the third quarter not allowing a score for either team. They continued to play strong in the fourth with Logan adding 2 points with a sfety for a final score of 31-14 in favor of the Bulldogs.
“Everyone played very good,” said Lugo. “I liked how I could tackle and set my teammates up for a tackle. It was fun to tackle and fun to make touchdowns. I am looking forward to doing our best on blocking and holding back Grinnell next week.” The Dogs will travel Grainfield on September 10 to play the Grinnell/Wheatland Thunderhawks. There will be a flag game following the tackle game.
