Young riders endure scorching heat at Thomas County Fair Horse Show

Thomas County 4-H members brought plenty of enthusiasm to the fairgrounds July 25, but the day’s extreme heat ultimately made endurance nearly as important as horsemanship.

The young riders and their horses were ready to compete when the Thomas County Fair Horse Show began that morning. As temperatures climbed, however, the competition increasingly became a war of attrition, testing the stamina of participants and animals alike.

Despite the difficult conditions, seven exhibitors representing the Brewster Prairie Gem and Solomon Valley 4-H clubs combined for 10 blue ribbons in five classes.

Bentley Luckert of Brewster Prairie Gem earned grand champion honors in halter mares, with clubmate Kimber Carpenter receiving reserve grand champion. Luckert also competed in halter geldings, finishing as reserve grand champion behind Brylie Harter of Solomon Valley.

In junior horse showmanship, Brewster Prairie Gem members claimed both top awards. Colt Carpenter was named grand champion, while Brooklyn Reid earned reserve grand champion.

Kyndal Harter of Solomon Valley captured the grand champion award in intermediate horse showmanship. Bryer Reid of Brewster Prairie Gem was the reserve grand champion.

Kimber Carpenter closed out the listed showmanship results as grand champion in the senior horse class. Brylie Harter received reserve grand champion honors.
