Colby senior Kalyssa White sets up Harper Vaughn for one of a kills

The Colby Lady Eagle volleyball team hit the road Thursday October 2, for a triangular at Cimarron, facing both the Bluejays and the Holcomb Longhorns in a night filled with long rallies and flashes of strong play on both sides of the net.

In the opening match against host Cimarron, the Eagles started fast, taking the first set 25–21 behind the offensive energy of senior outside hitter Shaylee Holzmeister and the steady defense of Sadie Chaney. Junior Harper Vaughn swung the momentum midway through the opening set, serving up a string of aces that fueled a 5–0 Colby run to erase a six-point deficit and tie the score at 13. From there, Kalyssa White and Bailey McCorkle each added points at the net to help Colby close the set strong.

Cimarron answered in the second set with improved blocking and tough serves, pulling away for a 25–15 win. Colby’s back-row play kept several points alive—thanks to key digs from Joslyn Bartlett and Holzmeister—but the Bluejays’ power hitting proved difficult to contain.

The deciding third set was a battle early, as Holzmeister and Vaughn traded attacks with Cimarron’s front row. Colby took a 6–5 lead after kills from Chaney and Savannah Krohn, but Cimarron regained control late behind Schilling’s hitting and finished off the set 25–17. Despite the loss, the Eagles’ scrappy play and improved communication showed through the night’s toughest rallies.

Colby then faced Holcomb in the second match, where the Longhorns—one of the top-ranked teams in Class 3A—showed their strength in a straight-set victory, 25–6, 25–19. The Eagles regrouped after a tough first set and fought point-for-point through the second behind the setting of Emily Flanagan and big swings from Vaughn and Holzmeister. Chaney added a late kill down the sideline as Colby cut the deficit to 19–16 before Holcomb closed the match with a 6–3 run.

The Lady Eagles will return to action Tuesday as they travel to Scott City for another conference triangular.
