October 4, 2025
The Colby Community College Trojans continued their impressive run through the Kansas Jayhawk Conference on Saturday, defeating Garden City Community College in a thrilling five-set match, 25-17, 23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 17-15. The victory marked another hard-earned road win for the Trojans, who have proven to be one of the most resilient and balanced teams in the NJCAA Division I ranks this fall.
The match was a test of depth and determination from the opening serve. Colby came out focused and efficient in the first set, using its quick tempo and well-organized defense to keep the Broncbusters off balance. The Trojans’ front line applied steady pressure, while strong serving created opportunities to build an early lead. Their consistent attacking helped them close out the opening set comfortably, 25-17.
Garden City adjusted quickly in set two, finding momentum behind a more aggressive offensive push and improved serve reception. The Broncbusters’ outside hitters connected on several key swings late in the frame to narrowly take it, 25-23, evening the match. Colby regained its rhythm in the third set, taking better control at the net and converting on second-chance balls. The Trojans pulled away late to earn a 25-20 win and move back in front, two sets to one.
In the fourth, both sides traded long rallies as Garden City’s defense tightened. Despite several well-executed sequences from Colby’s offense, the Broncbusters managed to edge ahead 25-22, forcing a decisive fifth set. The final frame captured the intensity of the entire afternoon, featuring multiple lead changes and strong defensive play on both ends.
Tied at 15–15, Colby capitalized on its poise and conditioning, finishing the match with a critical block and a pair of clean kills to secure the 17–15 win. The Trojans’ ability to stay composed in the final moments reflected the discipline and teamwork that have defined their season.
Saturday’s match also capped a special week for the program. Sophomore setter Amanda Caputi was named the AVCA Two-Year College Player of the Week, recognizing her as one of the top players in the nation. She has already surpassed 2,000 career assists and has been honored as the KJCCC Setter of the Week five times this season. Her leadership and precision have been key in maintaining Colby’s offensive balance throughout conference play.
With the victory, Colby improved to 19–3 overall and remains among the top-ranked teams nationally. The Trojans now turn their attention to a road game at Cloud County Wednesday, October 8, as they continue their pursuit of a conference title and postseason success.
