Lady Eagles Battle Brutal Wind at Lakin Invitational
October 4, 2025
The Colby Lady Eagle golf team wrapped up their regular season on Saturday, October 4, at the Lakin Invitational, battling fierce winds across the Loucke Golf Course. Despite the challenging conditions, Colby finished tied for third place with a team score of 432, marking another consistent outing for the squad as they prepare for the upcoming GWAC League Tournament in Garden City on Monday.
Head Coach Rick Williams said it was one of the toughest weather days of the season. “It was brutally windy,” he said. “The girls fought hard all day. We were proud to see them battle through it.”
Colby’s scoring four were led by Cora DeGood, who carded a 108 and earned a tournament medal despite enduring several tough breaks on the course. Alayna Hrnicek continued her strong late-season form, shooting a 104—just a few strokes shy of breaking the 100-mark for the first time this year.
Stella Kauffman turned in her best performance of the season with a 113, surpassing her previous personal best by a wide margin. Meanwhile, Landrie McKee posted a remarkable turnaround after a rocky front nine. Struggling to adjust to the wind, she opened with a 69 on the front, but made key adjustments and recovered with a 55 on the back nine to finish at 124.
“That was one of the highlights of the day,” Coach Williams said. “Landrie could’ve easily folded after that front nine, but she got tough, made changes, and showed real maturity out there.”
Lakyn Sims rounded out the team’s efforts, shooting a solid 107 that included a strong front nine before conditions worsened later in the round.
The Lady Eagles competed without senir leader Braelyn Stupka, who was sidelined due to illness. Williams said the team hopes to have her back in the lineup for the GWAC tournament in Garden City, where all of Colby’s hard work this fall will be put to the test.
“I’m proud of how far these girls have come,” Williams said. “We’ve been improving every week. If we can stay tough and focused, we can make some noise at league.”
At the Lakin Invitational, Wichita County and Sublette shared the top spot on the leaderboard, each finishing with a team score of 430. Syracuse and Colby followed close behind, tying for third with identical scores of 432, while Stanton County rounded out the top five just one stroke back at 433.
As the regular season closes, the Lady Eagles carry momentum and confidence into league play—ready to challenge the region’s best under calmer skies.
