The Colby Community College women’s wrestling team turned in a productive weekend at the Bob Smith Open in Hays, highlighted by a home-area standout performance from freshman Aspen Sharpe and a podium finish by assistant coach and competitor Anastasia Hardin.

Sharpe, a Colby High School graduate competing at 110 pounds, delivered one of the most impressive efforts of the day and continued to show significant growth in her first collegiate season. She opened her tournament with a fall over Minot State’s Alexa Garcia, then followed with a second pin—this one in only 1:23—against Trinidad State’s Danna Alvarado to advance into the semifinals.

Though she fell to Oklahoma City University’s Alexis Miller, Sharpe bounced back with one of her best wins to date: a 1:01 fall over Addison Polk of Murray State. Polk is ranked eighth in the NJCAA, making the victory an important benchmark for Sharpe’s development. She ultimately finished fourth after dropping her final match to Schreiner University’s Mia Brown, but her performance earned praise from the coaching staff.

Aspen Sharpe delivers one of the tournament’s biggest upsets at 110 pounds, pinning NJCAA No. 8–ranked Addison Polk in just 1:01.

“Aspen did great. She’s been making a lot of progress in this year of development,” said head coach Michael Ruiz. “She beat Addyson Polk who is ranked number eight in the NJCAA. All in all she is exactly where we want her right now.”

The tournament also gave the Lady Trojans a boost of energy through the performance of assistant coach Anastasia Hardin, who stepped onto the mat unattached and battled her way to a third-place finish at 160 pounds. Hardin opened with authority—pinning Elisibeth Sandy of Adams State in just 38 seconds, then earning another fall against Oyinkansola Adeogun of Schreiner University in Round 2. She followed those wins with a 14-3 tech fall over Fort Hays State’s Kaylee Ricketts in the quarterfinals.

Hardin dropped a competitive 5-0 semifinal bout to Makayla Munoz of Oklahoma City University but rebounded quickly. She pinned Minot State’s Aliana Barnoski in 50 seconds to reach the medal match, then sealed third place with a 3:51 fall over Fort Hays State’s Marissa Porsch. Her performance accounted for 22 team points and added excitement to the day for the athletes watching from the sidelines.

“Coach Hardin got on the mat so the girls could have some fun watching her,” Ruiz said. “She finished in third, so it was a fun weekend.”

Other Lady Trojans—including Audrie Felkins, Emma Parker, Jazrine Nieto, and Kaylen McAtee—also secured wins throughout the tournament, using the event as another developmental step against a strong field.

Ruiz said the team continues trending in the right direction as more wrestlers return to the lineup.

“All in all, the girls worked areas where they needed improvement,” Ruiz said. “We should have most of our team back for the dual and tournament next week.”

With Sharpe’s breakout showing and Hardin’s podium finish leading the way, the Lady Trojans left Hays encouraged by the strides made and motivated for the next phase of their season.
