Colby High School’s Scholars Bowl squad is off to a fast, disciplined start this winter, opening the season with three strong tournament finishes and continued growth across its young roster. With Kansas Scholars Bowl operating under the KSHSAA format — rapid-fire rounds of 16 questions across math, science, social studies, language arts, fine arts, year-in-review and miscellaneous topics — consistency is often the difference between an average team and a competitive one. Through the first month, the Eagles have shown they can be both composed and competitive.

The season began on November 11 in Oberlin, where Colby posted a 4-3 record and finished third overall in the opening meet. Representing the Eagles were Nathaniel Bandy, Carter Quenzer, Brayden Lazaro, Blaine Wagoner, Parker Lazaro and Bretton Thomas. For a first outing, the group settled in quickly against an experienced field, gaining confidence as the day progressed and laying the groundwork for what would follow in later meets.

Colby returned to action on November 24 in Sharon Springs and delivered one of its most impressive performances to date. The Eagles finished 7-2 and claimed second place while facing a talent-heavy bracket that included multiple returning state qualifiers in Class 1A. Team members that day were Geoff Morris, Alirah George, Carter Quenzer, Miah Quenzer, Nathaniel Bandy and Bree Kough.

The momentum carried into December as the Eagles traveled to Atwood on December 1 and brought home their first tournament title of the winter. Colby went 4-1 on the day and averaged 70 points per round, a benchmark that approaches the pace of earning roughly half of all possible points in each match — a strong indicator of balanced knowledge across categories. The winning team included Blaine Wagoner, Taydon Janousek, Traeten Janousek, Geoff Morris, Miah Quenzer and Carter Quenzer.

What set this performance apart was Colby’s ability to dominate early in rounds, a critical factor in the KSHSAA format where momentum often determines outcomes. The Eagles swept all three social studies questions in three different rounds and added a complete sweep of the math category in another. Those bursts provided early cushions and forced opponents to play from behind, a position few recovered from.

Across all three meets, Colby has relied heavily on underclassmen stepping confidently into varsity-level roles. The rotation has been fluid by design, giving more students opportunities while building depth for the heart of the season. With demonstrated strength in social studies and math, growing consistency in language arts, and a wide pool of contributors, the Eagles appear poised for a strong run as winter competition continues.

Colby will resume action December 8 at home at the Colby High School beginning at 4:00 P.M. before entering the heavier stretch of league and postseason play early next semester. If the early results are any indication, the Eagles are developing into a well-balanced team capable of matching up with the best programs across northwest Kansas.
