The Colby Gamecocks Legion Baseball team punched their ticket finals with a chance to avenge an earlier tournament loss to Norton after a dominant 9-0 shutout win over the Gove County Yardgoats in their third game of the American Legion Zone Tournament held in Norton.
The Gamecocks wasted no time applying pressure, plating three runs in the opening frame. Braxton Withington crossed home on a bunt by Eloy Ruelas that was mishandled by the pitcher, scoring the first run of the game. Max Kersenbrock followed with an RBI groundout, and Conner Surmeier capped the inning with a sharp single to right, scoring Ruelas.
Surmeier was relentless at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three singles and two runs batted in. His steady presence at the top of the lineup consistently set the tone for Colby’s offensive rhythm.
Colby continued to build their lead in the third inning. After some savvy baserunning that included stolen bases by both Surmeier and Kersenbrock, Talon Andreasen grounded out to first, driving in a run. Moments later, a wild pitch allowed Surmeier to sprint home, extending the lead to 5-0.
The fifth inning saw more of the same. Surmeier knocked in Kersenbrock with a line drive to left, then advanced on the throw. Andreasen followed with a hard-hit single up the middle to score Surmeier, making it 7-0.
With solid contributions up and down the lineup, Colby racked up 13 hits. Withington, Keegan Glassman, and Ruelas each had multi-hit performances to back their offensive push.
Defensively, Colby was flawless. The team committed no errors, turned a double play, and received a stellar complete-game effort from Ruelas on the mound. The right-hander threw all seven innings, scattering just a few hits while striking out three Yardgoat batters in the shutout performance.
In the sixth, Withington added an RBI single, scoring Glassman. And in the seventh, Talon Wark drove in the final run of the game, plating Andreasen with a line drive to left. Wark was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double, but the damage was done.
The win showed an impressive Zone Tournament run and ensures the Gamecocks a spot at the Kansas American Legion State Tournament next weekend, with one more game yet to play.
With momentum and confidence building, Colby will look to beat Norton in the final next.
