In a grueling extra-innings thriller, the Colby Gamecocks American Legion baseball team fell just short of a zone championship on Friday, losing 4-3 to Norton in the final game of the tournament. Despite the heartbreaking loss, Colby’s strong tournament run secured them a spot in next week’s Kansas American Legion State Tournament.

Colby jumped ahead early in the bottom of the second inning. Talon Andreasen delivered a sharp single down the right field line to score Max Kersenbrock, who had earlier swiped third base. Moments later, courtesy runner Eloy Ruelas raced home on a lineout by Talon Wark and a miscue by Norton’s second baseman to give Colby a 2-0 lead.

The Gamecocks’ lead held until the top of the seventh, when Norton clawed back with a pair of clutch singles. Carter Springer plated Jack Carter, and Caden Seems followed with a game-tying hit to left field, scoring Springer and swinging the momentum toward Norton.

Andreasen took the mound for Colby and pitched a stellar eight innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on eight hits, with two strikeouts and two walks. Norton’s Jaden Boyle matched the effort, going nine full innings and holding Colby to two runs while striking out three.

The teams remained deadlocked through the next five innings, until the top of the 13th. Seems once again came through for Norton, this time with a two-run double that proved to be the game-winner, driving in Cale Railsback and Springer to make it 4-2.

Colby made a final push in the bottom half of the inning. Reid Ryan scored on a Brayden Foss single to cut the deficit to one, but the Gamecocks couldn’t bring home the tying run from third, ending the game — and the tournament — in dramatic fashion.

Offensively, Colby racked up 11 hits. Reid Ryan went 3-for-6 to lead the team, while Andreasen and Foss each drove in a run. Corbin Sherman added two hits and was one of three Gamecocks — along with Kersenbrock and Ruelas — to record multiple stolen bases. The team tallied eight stolen bases overall and turned one double play.

Reid Ryan hit 3 for 6 against Norton in the Final while scoring once.

Norton collected 13 hits, led by Jack Carter’s three-hit outing and Seems’ three RBIs. Springer and Kendall also contributed multiple hits for the eventual zone champions.

With their runner-up finish, the Gamecocks earn a well-deserved berth in the State Tournament next week, where they’ll look to bounce back and extend their postseason run.
