Colby Grade School Hosts Annual Field Day

Colby Public School's Physical Education instructor Bryan Miller led a dance off after students and fathers competed hard throughout the day.

A tradition of fun, laughter, and friendly competition continued Friday, Sept. 19, as Colby Grade School hosted its annual Field Day at Dennen Field. The event, organized by physical education teacher Bryan Miller with support from the PTO, administration, teachers, Pizza Hut, and the junior high wrestling team, brought together more than 350 students for a day of spirited games and community pride.

Miller said the highlight for many came during the afternoon session when second, third, and fourth graders lined up for the 100-meter dash. “The students always look forward to that,” Miller said. “The stadium is pretty full with parents, and in some of the faster heats, I can feel the nerves coming from the students as I am lining them up for their race.”

The day featured an array of events designed to engage students of all ages. Obstacle races had kids balancing plastic eggs on spoons, racing with rubber chickens pinched between pool noodles, and bouncing across the finish line on oversized exercise balls. Tug-of-war matches quickly became crowd favorites, whether it was boys versus girls, students versus junior helpers, or students testing their strength against a couple of teachers.

Adding to the fun, Miller surprised families with a “dad tug-of-war.” The friendly showdown featured 10 fathers on each side in the morning session and 13 on each side in the afternoon. As the dads strained against the rope, students roared with laughter while moms captured the moment on their phones as Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero” played over the loudspeakers. “The students got to enjoy the dads battle each other,” Miller said with a smile.

Other activities included bean bag toss challenges, tarp races where students (and sometimes teachers) pulled teammates across the finish line, and colorful parachute games that crowded the field with energy. The day concluded with a dance party that even parents joined, ensuring smiles on every face.

Miller expressed gratitude for the strong community support that makes the event possible year after year. “The weather was beautiful, and I am proud to be able to put on an event that entertains 350 students and seeing the parents come out and being involved,” he said. “The event always goes very well, and I am very thankful for the help from PTO, Pizza Hut, our administration, elementary teachers, and the junior high wrestling team.”

Field Day once again proved to be more than just a break from the classroom. It was a chance for Colby students, teachers, and families to come together in celebration of health, teamwork, and community spirit—an afternoon that ended with both tired legs and full hearts.
