Colby Eagle Football lost at Cimarron 0-39

A week after celebrating a Homecoming victory, the Colby Eagles experienced the opposite side of football on September 19, falling 39-0 to the Cimarron Bluejays on the road in Week 3 district play.

The Eagles entered the matchup 2-0, but from the opening whistle, miscues defined their night. Colby’s first three possessions ended on downs, a muffed punt, and a punt, setting up Cimarron with favorable field position. The Bluejays capitalized late in the first quarter with a 5-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead.

Cimarron’s momentum only grew in the second quarter. A 32-yard touchdown pass extended the lead to 13-0, and two more explosive plays—a 62-yard strike through the air and a 59-yard rushing touchdown—broke the game open before halftime. Colby trailed 26-0 at the break, its offense slowed by penalties, dropped snaps, and sacks.

The third quarter showed flashes of potential as the Eagles pieced together their longest drive of the night. A 16-yard reception by Gage Krohn and strong runs from Talon Wark and Cody Wright pushed Colby into the red zone. But penalties and a sack ended the threat, leaving the Eagles empty-handed.

Cimarron put the game away in the final quarter with touchdown runs of 15 and 4 yards, stretching the margin to 39-0.

For the Eagles, the loss of starting center Zachary Kistler loomed large. The reshuffled offensive line struggled with shotgun snaps, leading to multiple drive-killing sacks for quarterback Maxson Smiley. Colby finished with just over 52 yards rushing—Wark carrying the bulk of the load—and Smiley went 7-for-21 passing for 47 yards.

Despite the difficult night, the coaching staff found areas of growth.

“We know we didn’t play to our standard,” the Eagles’ head coach Ryan Mosier said afterward. “What could go wrong did last night. We need to improve fundamentals and continue to get better day by day. I felt as if our lines were bright spots in a tough night. When we put it together, it is a different story. We will continue to get better.”

With the loss, Colby drops to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in district play. The Eagles will look to regroup quickly as they host Hugoton in another key district contest this Friday. Hugoton will be a tough challenge as they are coming off a 62-7 victory over Lakin in week 3, and have yet to lose this season with wins over Southwestern Heights and Ulysses.
