Lady Eagles Battle Strong Field at Smoky Valley Invitational

September 30, 2025

The Colby Lady Eagle tennis team made the long trek to Lindsborg on Tuesday, September 30, to compete in the annual Smoky Valley Invitational, one of the premier events on the eastern Kansas schedule. The tournament brought together a field of top programs from across the region, offering the Lady Eagles both a stiff challenge and a valuable opportunity to measure their progress against some of the state’s best.

In singles play, Colby’s Katelyn Diederich finished 12th overall, while teammate Bristol Niblock followed close behind in 13th. Both players battled through deep draws filled with ranked opponents, showing resilience and steady improvements in their games.

The doubles side saw equally competitive results. Yatzy Barraza and Heidi Gray teamed up to finish 12th, while the duo of Anjali Balbuena and Bella Castaneda earned an 11th-place finish. Each pair demonstrated strong chemistry and tactical growth, managing to compete well against seasoned tandems from larger schools.

Head coach Wendy Weishaar was encouraged by her team’s effort in such a talented tournament. “Eastern Kansas tourneys are so talent-packed and matches are so fun to play. We came away with placings that show our hard work has really paid off,” Weishaar said.

The Smoky Valley Invitational has long been recognized for drawing strong programs and creating a festival-like atmosphere around girls’ tennis in central Kansas. This year was no exception, with courts across Lindsborg buzzing with action throughout the day. For Colby, the experience was as much about growth as it was about results, giving players a chance to face new competition and test their skills under pressure.

As the season heads into its final stretch, the Lady Eagles believe these kinds of challenges will sharpen them for league and regional play. The steady climb in placements across recent tournaments has built confidence, and the team is beginning to establish the consistency needed to make a run in October.

With their Smoky Valley matches now behind them, Colby turns its attention to the GWAC schedule and the road to regionals, where every point and placement will matter. The Lady Eagles hope the lessons learned in Lindsborg—about composure, adjustments, and grit—will carry them forward.
