January 15, 2026

The Colby Community College women’s basketball team picked up a hard-fought conference road win on January 15, edging Garden City Community College 53–50 inside Conestoga Arena in a game that came down to execution in the final minutes.

Colby entered the contest looking to continue building momentum in a tightly packed Jayhawk Conference race and did so by leaning on defensive toughness and timely scoring late. The Trojans trailed after the opening quarter and went into halftime down 27–18 after struggling to find rhythm offensively against Garden City’s pressure. Despite shooting just 32.6 percent from the field on the night, Colby stayed within striking distance by attacking the glass and getting to the free-throw line.

The third quarter marked the turning point. Colby outscored Garden City 13–12 in the period, trimming the deficit and setting the stage for a decisive fourth quarter. The Trojans saved their best stretch for last, putting up 22 points in the final 10 minutes while holding Garden City to 11. Defensive stops, second-chance opportunities, and steady free-throw shooting allowed Colby to slowly chip away and eventually take control.

Dessirae Ulmer led the Trojans with 15 points, efficiently scoring at the rim and converting from the free-throw line, where she went 7-for-7. Easha Potts added a strong interior presence with eight points and a team-high 12 rebounds, providing multiple key offensive rebounds that extended possessions. Piri Lewis contributed 12 points off the bench and was instrumental late, scoring and knocking down critical free throws as the game tightened.

Colby’s ability to capitalize at the foul line proved decisive. The Trojans finished 22-of-27 at the stripe, compared to Garden City’s 7-of-11, a margin that ultimately separated the two teams in a three-point game. Colby also received 18 points from its bench, giving the Trojans valuable depth in a physical contest.

Garden City was led by Marshea Fisher with 12 points, while Elektra Mjoll added 11 off the bench, but the home team was unable to match Colby’s late surge. The game featured three ties and three lead changes, underscoring how evenly matched the teams were throughout the night.

With the win, Colby improved its conference standing with a 6-5 record and gained confidence from a resilient road performance. The Trojans will look to build on the effort as they continue their season, carrying forward the defensive intensity and composure that sealed the victory in Garden City.

Next, the Lady Trojans will have their hands full with the 11th ranked Butler Community College as they come to Colby on January 17.
