The Colby High School boys wrestling team made the trip east to Beloit on January 23 for the Beloit Invitational, but winter weather across the region reshaped the event before the first whistle ever sounded. What is typically a demanding two-day tournament was condensed into a single-day format after multiple teams were unable to travel, forcing meet organizers to adjust brackets and schedules on the fly.

Despite the altered structure, Colby took full advantage of the opportunity, putting together a strong overall showing and finishing third as a team with 144.5 points. Only Abilene and Concordia finished ahead of the Eagles in the final standings, with Colby outperforming a deep field that included Clay Center, Silver Lake, Smith Center, Beloit, and several other competitive programs.

The highlight of the day for Colby came at 132 pounds, where senior Talon Wark delivered a dominant performance to capture the lone individual championship for the Eagles. In a season that has already been filled with consistency and leadership, Wark’s run through the bracket stood out as a defining moment in his senior campaign.

After receiving a first-round bye, Wark opened his day with an emphatic technical fall in the quarterfinals, overwhelming Nolan VanAllen of Salina Central to advance quickly into the semifinals. From there, Wark continued to dictate the pace, securing a fall over Miller Coffman of Clay Center to punch his ticket to the championship bout.

In the finals, Wark faced Beloit’s Kellen Elam in a hard-fought match that showcased both composure and control. Wark built his lead through a steady combination of takedowns, escapes, and late-match pressure, ultimately earning a 12-5 decision to claim first place and the tournament title.

The win capped a flawless day and reinforced his position as one of Colby’s most reliable point scorers entering the stretch run of the season.

Colby saw several other wrestlers reach the podium and contribute valuable team points. At 106 pounds, Laken Sharpe battled through the consolation rounds to place third, recording multiple falls along the way. Julian Salcido added a runner-up finish at 113 pounds after advancing to the finals with a fall and a narrow semifinal decision. Eric Schroeder turned in a strong performance at 150 pounds, fighting back after a semifinal loss to earn third place.

Colby senior Talon Wark controls the action on his way to a 132-pound championship at the Beloit Invitational. Wark went unbeaten on the day, earning a technical fall in the quarterfinals, a semifinal pin, and a decisive 12-5 win in the finals to become Colby’s lone individual champion as the Eagles finished third as a team.

Additional placers included Nathan Schroeder at 138 pounds with a fourth-place finish, Dalton Jacob taking fifth at 165, Pierce Bartlett placing sixth at 144, Vance Dempewolf finishing seventh at 157, and McCager Wright earning fourth at 215. Each of those efforts played a role in keeping Colby near the top of the team standings throughout the day.

While the scaled-back format changed the rhythm of the weekend, the Beloit Invitational still provided meaningful competition and a valuable measuring stick for the Eagles. With a team trophy finish and a championship performance from a senior leader, Colby left Beloit with momentum, confidence, and plenty to build on as the postseason approaches.
