Lady Eagles Outlast Goodland in Fourth-Quarter Thriller at the Event Center
February 10, 2026
The Colby Lady Eagles protected their home floor Tuesday night, outlasting rival Goodland 47-42 in a physical, high-energy battle at the Colby Event Center.
From the opening tip, it was clear both teams understood what was at stake. Colby struck first with confidence, knocking down back-to-back three-pointers to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Harper Vaughn set the tone early with a triple and a strong inside finish, helping the Lady Eagles establish momentum in front of an energized home crowd.
But Goodland, as expected, answered.
The Cowgirls tightened up defensively, creating turnovers and forcing Colby into uncomfortable possessions. By the end of the first quarter, the game was deadlocked at 13-13. The early theme was apparent: this would be a four-quarter fight.
Colby found rhythm again in the second quarter, turning the game into what felt like a three-point showcase. Vaughn connected from deep again, Sadie Chaney added a triple of her own, and Maddie McCarty stretched the defense with perimeter shooting. With six minutes left in the half, the Lady Eagles had built a 21-14 advantage.
Still, Goodland refused to fade. Active hands in the passing lanes and aggressive pressure kept the margin manageable. By halftime, Colby clung to a slim 26-25 lead after a late Cowgirl push.
Colby opened the half with renewed defensive intensity, turning stops into transition opportunities. Shaylee took control offensively, attacking the paint and finishing through contact. The Lady Eagles extended their lead to 36-29 heading into the fourth quarter, appearing poised to take command.
Goodland opened the final frame on an 8-0 run, capitalizing on Colby miscues and converting at the free throw line. Suddenly, the Cowgirls led 37-36, and the pressure was squarely on the home team.
With the game tightening and every possession magnified, Holzmeister attacked the rim relentlessly, drawing contact and converting key and-one opportunities. Twice in the fourth quarter she powered through defenders to finish and complete three-point plays, swinging the energy back to Colby. Her performance down the stretch proved decisive.
The Lady Eagles steadied themselves defensively in the final two minutes. A critical stop, followed by clutch free throws, helped stretch the lead back to two possessions. Colby converted when it mattered most, closing the game on a strong note to secure the 47-42 victory.
Holzmeister led all scorers with 21 points, delivering several key finishes in the paint and multiple clutch free throws down the stretch. Vaughn added 9 points, including two early three-pointers that helped Colby establish momentum. Cheney and McCarty each contributed 5 points, providing timely perimeter scoring, while Fia Tubbs chipped in 3 points and Kalyssa White added 2 to round out the Lady Eagles’ balanced effort in the 47-42 win.
Colby weathered Goodland’s pressure defense, overcame a fourth-quarter deficit, and responded in critical moments. The Lady Eagles were not perfect—turnovers and missed opportunities kept the Cowgirls within striking distance—but when the final minutes arrived, they executed.
Next, the Lady Eagles will be traveling to Cimarron on Friday to continue the final stretch of the season.
