The Colby Community College Lady Trojans opened their home slate this week at Carl Adams Field, welcoming Hill College out of Texas for a season-opening doubleheader that featured early momentum swings, timely hitting, and a late-inning thriller.

Game one proved to be a challenging opener for the Trojans as Hill capitalized on walks and extra-base hits to build separation late in the contest. Colby found its rhythm in the second inning when aggressive base running helped manufacture a run. With runners moving on the bases, Emmy Supernor executed a bunt that allowed Brooke Zinken to cross the plate, cutting Hill’s early lead in half.

Supernor paced the offense in game one, finishing with two hits and one RBI. Ava Pezely and Bailey Jackson each added a hit, while Zinken accounted for Colby’s run scored. The Trojans showed flashes defensively, turning a pair of double plays, including a sharp sequence from shortstop Olivia Wirth to first baseman Addison Richardson that erased a Hill threat in the fifth.

Hill, however, broke the game open in the sixth inning behind a line-drive home run to center field and multiple bases-loaded walks. Despite continued defensive effort from Wirth in the middle infield and steady pitching work from C. Cramer and A. Trujillo, the Rebels pulled away for a 9-1 decision.

If game one was a lesson in limiting free passes, game two showcased the Lady Trojans’ offensive potential.

Colby struck first in the bottom of the opening frame. A sacrifice fly from Kylan Sorenson brought home the game’s first run, and the Trojans continued to pressure Hill pitching with disciplined at-bats. In the second inning, Brooke Zinken electrified the home crowd with a two-run home run to center field, giving Colby a 3-0 advantage.

The momentum continued into the middle innings. Brooklyn Ekker delivered a clutch two-run double in the fifth, and Briley Christensen followed with a towering solo home run in the sixth to extend the Trojan lead to 8-3. Ella McDonald added two hits on the afternoon and scored once, while Lucy Davis and Sorenson each contributed RBI production to the balanced attack.

In total, Zinken finished game two with one hit, one run scored, and two RBI. Christensen tallied a hit, run, and RBI, while Ekker recorded one hit, one run, and two RBI. McDonald’s two-hit performance provided stability near the top of the order.

Inside the circle, K. Zukewich delivered key strikeouts to halt Hill rallies through the middle innings. The Trojans appeared in control entering the seventh with an 8-6 lead.

Hill mounted one final push in the top of the seventh, stringing together timely singles and taking advantage of free passes to reclaim a 9-8 edge. Colby’s final at-bat saw a line out, ground out, and strikeout end the comeback bid, sealing a narrow one-run loss.

Though the Lady Trojans split opportunities across the two contests without securing a win, the doubleheader offered clear indicators of growth. The offensive production in game two demonstrated the lineup’s depth and power potential, while defensive flashes in both games highlighted the athleticism in the infield.

Opening day at Carl Adams Field provided an early measuring stick. With timely hitting and tightened control in the circle, the Lady Trojans showed they possess the pieces to compete as the season unfolds.
