Slow Start Dooms Colby Eagles in Home Loss to Hugoton

Colby’s Jordan Jones elevates for a contested jumper over the Hugoton defense during Friday night’s game at the Colby Event Center, where he led all scorers with 23 points despite the Eagles’ setback.

The Colby Eagles endured a long night on the floor Friday, February 7, as Hugoton came into the Colby Event Center and controlled the tempo from the opening tip in a 72–41 road victory.

Colby struggled to find any offensive rhythm early, and Hugoton capitalized immediately. The Eagles did not score their first basket until the 2:24 mark of the opening quarter, while Hugoton built an 18–2 lead behind efficient shooting and three early three-pointers. Missed shots and turnovers plagued Colby in the opening minutes, and the Eagles found themselves in a deep hole by the end of the first period, trailing 18–2 after a quarter that never allowed Colby to settle into the game.

The second quarter did little to change the trajectory early on. Hugoton continued to push the pace and stretch the floor, expanding the lead to 33–13 midway through the quarter. Colby’s body language reflected the uphill battle, but the Eagles did show a late response before halftime. Increased energy on the defensive end and a more aggressive approach attacking the basket allowed Colby to close the quarter with a modest run. Despite the improvement, the deficit remained significant at the break, with Hugoton holding a 38–21 advantage.

Any hopes of a second-half surge were short-lived. Hugoton came out of halftime poised and physical, repeatedly earning second-chance points while limiting Colby’s ability to generate stops. Offensive rebounds and steady ball movement allowed Hugoton to maintain control throughout the third quarter. Colby continued to battle but struggled to string together defensive possessions, and the margin grew to 53–33 by the end of the period.

The fourth quarter followed a similar pattern. Hugoton stayed disciplined offensively and took advantage of Colby miscues, extending the lead beyond 20 points. With just under three minutes remaining, the Colby coaching staff turned to the bench, signaling the end of a difficult night as the visitors cruised to the 72–41 final.

Jordan Jones led the Eagles offensively, finishing with a game-high 23 points and carrying much of the scoring load throughout the night. No other Colby player reached double figures, a reflection of the team’s overall offensive struggles against Hugoton’s pressure and defensive rotations. Hugoton, meanwhile, placed multiple players in double figures and showcased balanced scoring that kept Colby from keying on any single threat.

The loss was Colby’s fourth game in a demanding five-day stretch and showed the cumulative effect of a busy schedule against a disciplined opponent. While the scoreboard told a tough story, the late first-half push and continued effort from Jones provided small positives for the Eagles as they look ahead.

Colby will aim to regroup quickly with postseason play approaching, focusing on tightening up defensive rebounding and finding more consistent offensive production across the lineup. The Eagles will have little time to dwell on the setback as they prepare for their next contest, with opportunities still ahead to build momentum before the season reaches its final stretch.
