Turnovers, Cold Shooting Hamper Lady Eagles in Home Loss to Hugoton
February 7, 2026
The Colby High School Lady Eagles endured a difficult afternoon on their home floor Friday, February 7, as Hugoton controlled the tempo from start to finish and handed Colby a 40-29 loss at the Colby Event Center. A combination of turnovers missed opportunities near the basket, and sustained defensive pressure from Hugoton proved too much for the Lady Eagles to overcome.
Colby struggled to find any early rhythm in the opening quarter. The Lady Eagles committed several turnovers in the first six minutes of play, allowing Hugoton to jump out to a quick 14-4 advantage. Hugoton’s ability to apply pressure on the perimeter while attacking the paint offensively set the tone early. Colby generated quality looks inside but could not capitalize, missing multiple close-range shots. By the end of the first quarter, Hugoton had seized control with a 16-4 lead, as Colby managed just one field goal in the period.
The second quarter opened with a brief spark for Colby. The Lady Eagles connected on a pair of three-pointers and added points at the free throw line to trim the deficit to 16-11, showing signs of momentum. That push, however, was short-lived. Hugoton responded with strong ball movement and timely perimeter shooting, regaining control and reestablishing a double-digit lead. Colby continued to struggle with ball security, finishing the half with more turnovers than points as Hugoton carried a 23-11 advantage into halftime.
Colby’s challenges continued after the break. Hugoton opened the third quarter with a quick scoring run, pushing the margin to 27-11 before Colby was able to answer. Harper Vaughn provided one of the bright spots for the Lady Eagles, knocking down a pair of three-pointers to keep Colby within striking distance. Despite those efforts, consistency on offense remained elusive. Hugoton’s defense forced Colby into rushed possessions, while the Eagles capitalized on turnovers to maintain a comfortable cushion. Heading into the fourth quarter, Colby trailed 31-21.
Any hopes of a late comeback were effectively dashed early in the final period. Hugoton connected on back-to-back three-pointers to extend the lead to 37-21, its largest of the game. Colby continued to battle, with points from the free throw line and inside buckets cutting the deficit to as few as 11 late in the quarter. However, missed layups and additional turnovers prevented the Lady Eagles from making a sustained run. Hugoton calmly worked the clock down the stretch and sealed the 40-29 victory.
Harper Vaughn and Shaley Holzmeister led Colby with nine points apiece, while Sadie Chaney added five points. Emily Flanagan finished with four points, and Maddie McCarty and Colissa White each contributed from the free throw line.
The loss drops Colby to 10-8 on the season, as the Lady Eagles look to regroup and clean up ball-handling issues moving forward. Despite the final score, the effort never waned, and Colby will aim to turn Friday’s lessons into improvement as postseason play approaches.
